I have a special interest in working with people who live with disabilities and impairments, as well as their families and carers. I have extensive experience of working in both health and social care and counselling settings, with clients living with a wide range of conditions and disabilities including:
With my experience of working with people with disabilities, and having a neurological stammer myself, I have a deep understanding of the unique stresses living with a disability can create. These difficulties can include dealing with the often painful and exhausting physical and practical aspects of one's disability on a daily basis; and discrimination, including social exclusion, and barriers to gaining employment and accessing everyday services.
These often hugely challenging experiences can have a profound impact on the person's psychological and emotional well-being. Receiving compassionate and professional support from someone who understands first-hand the practical, physical, and emotional difficulties that so often come with having a disability, can really help ease these daily stresses, and assist you in finding new and helpful ways to deal with your situation.
As well as the impact disability can have on the person, it can also affect those who support them, such as their families, partners, and carers. As a person who supports someone with a disability, you may be struggling with feelings of overwhelm, exhaustion, powerlessness, anger, or isolation. I can offer you a confidential, supportive space where you can express your feelings openly and without judgement, which in itself can bring great relief, and where together we can explore new ways for you to manage any difficulties you may be experiencing around supporting the person you care for.
